Cloud Hosting Unveiled

What is cloud hosting in reality? The word 'cloud' appears to be very modish in today's information technology, World Wide Web and hosting phraseology. Even so, only a select few in fact are familiar with what cloud hosting is. Perhaps it is a good idea to inform yourself about cloud hosting services. To render a very lengthy story concise, we will first notify you about what cloud hosting is not.

1. Cloud Hosting is Not Limited to a Remote File Storage Solely.

1. Offering a remote file storage solution, which comprises one disk storage tool for all clients, does not turn any given web hosting company into a real cloud hosting provider.

The cPanel web hosting distributors call the ability to distribute remote data storage services a cloud hosting service. So far there is nothing wrong with the cloud classification, but... we are talking about hosting solutions, not remote file storage solutions for personal or business purposes. There's constantly one "but", isn't there? It's not sufficient to name a shared web hosting solution, based on a one-single-server hosting environment, precisely like cPanel, a "cloud hosting" solution. This is so because the other parts of the whole web hosting platform must be working in exactly the same way - this does not relate solely to the remote disk storage. The other services entailed in the entire hosting procedure also must be remote, separated and "clouded". And that's very difficult. Very few hosting distributors can actually do it.

2. It Encompasses Domain Names, E-mail Aliases, Databases, File Transfer Protocols, Control Panels, etc.

Cloud hosting is not limited to a remote file storage exclusively. We are discussing a hosting service, serving lots of domains, online portals, mailboxes, and so on, right?

To name a hosting service a "cloud hosting" one takes a lot more than offering only remote file storage mounts (or perchance physical servers). The mail server(s) have to be dedicated exclusively to the e-mail connected services. Doing nothing else than these given procedures. There might be just one single or perhaps a whole cluster of email servers, determined by the overall server load produced. To have a real cloud hosting solution, the remote database servers should be working as one, regardless of their actual amount. Doing nothing else. The same goes for the clients' web hosting CPs, the File Transfer Protocol, etc.

3. There are Cloud Domain Name Servers (DNSs) as well.

The DNSs (Domain Name Servers) of a true cloud hosting services provider will support multiple data center locations on multiple continents.

Here's an illustration of a Domain Name Server of a genuine cloud hosting provider:

dns1.webhosting.724web.com

dns2.webhosting.724web.com

If such a DNS is offered by your hosting solutions provider, it's not a guarantee that there is a cloud hosting environment in use, but you can definitely be confident when you discern a DNS like the one underneath:

dns658.hostgator.com

dns659.hostgator.com

that there isn't any cloud web hosting service. This kind of DNS merely shows that the hosting platform in use is one-single-server based. Probably it's cPanel. cPanel is a single-server hosting platform and maintains a market share of more than 98%. In cPanel's case, one single physical server is responsible for all hosting services (web, email, DNS, databases, FTP, web hosting CP(s), web files, and so on).

Remote File Storage - The Distorted Definition of Cloud Hosting.

So, a cloud hosting solution is not confined only to a remote disk storage service, as many web hosting vendors wish it was. Unluckily for them, if that was the case, the majority of the file hosting service providers would have been classified as cloud hosting ones long ago! They are not categorized as such, because they plainly supply file hosting services, not cloud web hosting solutions. The file hosting platform appears indeed quite simple, when compared to the hosting platform. The remote data storage platform is not a cloud web hosting platform. It cannot be, since it's just one simple fraction of the whole cloud hosting platform. There's plenty more to be discovered in the cloud hosting platform: the hosting Control Panel cloud, the database clouds (MySQL, PostgreSQL), the DNS cloud, the FTP cloud, the mail cloud and... in the upcoming future, perhaps a few new clouds we currently don't know about will appear unexpectedly.
